Big Bend!!!

Wow, what an awe inspiring place in this great state of ours.  I wouldn’t necessarily call this park beautiful, but it certainly has a beauty like no other that I’ve ever seen.  I honestly didn’t realize we had elevations this high in Texas.  The accessible (drivable) elevation was over 6000 ft, where the mountains reached 8,000 ft.  That mountainous desert is huge, with wildlife, ruins, and bluebonnets blooming…in early March, which is pretty cool.  There isn’t much else I can say about Big Bend National Park, except that I highly recommend anyone seeing it.  God does good work. 🙂

The first place we visited was Castolon.  The Alvino house is the oldest known adobe structure in Big Bend…and it’s still standing.  It was larger than I would have thought, and very well built…which is why it’s probably still standing.  😉

Here is a little history on that, if you’re interested…https://www.nps.gov/bibe/learn/historyculture/castolon_history.htm

The Rio Grande
Santa Elena Canyon on the Rio Grande

The Rio Grande is breathtaking.  We took a hike through the Santa Elena Canyon, which would have been more fun if I had remembered my water.  Oops…I was downing my water as soon as we made it back to the truck.  I’ll never make that mistake again!  haha  As we finished the hike we came face to face with a family group of Javelina. Well, they were far enough away that they weren’t threatened by us, so that was a relief…for us and them, I suppose.  Apparently, it’s rare for them to be aggressive towards humans, but who wants to take that chance? Not I…lol.  We went back to the park a few more times, and even took the dogs on our last trip.  I’m not sure how much they like being in the truck, but they enjoy being with us so they were happy.  🙂

So much for getting the pups to pay attention…haha

So, this was our Big Bend experience.

Enjoy the pics!

So, yes, Texas has everything from mountains and desert to beautiful trees and flowers…and even the ocean. The wonders of Texas never cease to amaze me.
