We stayed at the McMillen RV Park in Fort Davis.
It wasn’t much but it had what we needed at a decent price and was right outside the town. Will treated me to a birthday lunch at the Black Bear Restaurant located at the Indian Lodge in the Davis Mountains. There wasn’t really anything on the menu that I could eat, so Will asked them if they could cook a grilled chicken breast for me. They did and it was very tasty, especially for something that wasn’t on the menu. 🙂 For the record, the menu consisted of food I would usually eat. I have given up fried food for Lent and most of what they had was deep fried…or beef, so the grilled chicken was perfect.
I decided I wanted to take a little trip to Alpine for the afternoon of my special day. The drive there was mountainous with very interesting plants. We also found ruins about halfway there. And since y’all know how much I love history…that was probably the highlight of our trip to Alpine. 🙂 It’s another small town about 25 miles southeast of Fort Davis. The main reason we went was to see where my in-laws attended college.
Sul Ross University is really the only reason to ever live in Alpine. Wow, that place was hoppin’…..LOL. Actually, the school is a larger than we expected, and probably a lot larger than Will’s parents remember it. It also has a Big Bend Museum in the building…and it was free! That was interesting and very educational. It’s also a very pretty campus, and I can see the appeal, as long as you can leave that town on weekends. 😉 There is one thing I forgot to mention…Dan Blocker also attended Sul Ross. Of course I have to mention this since Bonanza is the BEST t.v. show ever made!!!! I totally wanted to put on the hat, but I couldn’t get in the case. lol
As I stated in the previous blog, there isn’t much to do here in this small Texas town. I really wanted to golf for my birthday, but unfortunately there wasn’t a course in Fort Davis. However, Will did it again. He gave me a wonderful birthday! He made reservations at the McDonald Observatory in the Davis Mountains for a “Star Party”. That was so..….wait for it……………………..
OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!
No, seriously, there was a short orientation right before the sun set, then they sent us off to view the stars and planets. There were about 8 telescopes, and we went to each one to look up at the most amazing universe that surrounds us. It really was a fascinating experience. Leave it to Will to make my birthday extra special.
Next stop…Marfa, TX!
